Chinese electric-vehicle maker BYD has unseated Tesla to become the top-selling EV brand in Hong Kong for the first time. According to recent data from the city’s Transport Department, BYD registered 920 new electric vehicles in September, capturing 23.16% of Hong Kong’s EV market, while Tesla recorded 853 registrations.
In that same month, electric cars dominated the private-passenger vehicle market, with 3,542 EV registrations, representing nearly 76% of all new private car registrations in Hong Kong.
This shift is part of a broader trend in which mainland Chinese automakers, including BYD, are gaining strong traction in Hong Kong. Industry analysts say this is due to a combination of advanced technology, competitive pricing, and growing consumer preference for local EV brands.
BYD’s rise in Hong Kong is also being closely watched as a potential stepping stone for its global ambitions.
